Grizzly bear near the ranchOUR valley is one of few places in the world where you can watch totally wild grizzlies in their natural habitat.

They come down from the mountains and feast on the salmon that come up our river to spawn.

Unlike the large popular national parks, where each bear attracts a cluster of onlookers, our valley is remote and little known.

Apple near Grizzly Bear RanchWe keep the numbers of guests small to make sure the experience remains a personal one and to minimise our impact on the environment.

Our guides are trained, experienced and local and you can expect to have a maximum of four guests to one guide.

As well as grizzlies, the valley in autumn is home to dozens, sometimes hundreds, of bald eagles who come to feed on the fish. You may also see black bears.

"It's hard to find the right words when we saw the grizzlies - blessed, awesome, privileged to glimpse these bears in their own environment. Julius and Kristin were such wonderful hosts and felt like old friends." Greg & Kathy Elder, Edmonds, Washington.

A totally wild experience

Mum and cubsThe bears you will see are totally natural. You should not expect to see a multitude of bears feeding in one place (with a bank of tourists or photographers looking on).

Some bear-viewing operations habituate bears to humans. It is frequently these that are shown on wildlife videos and documentaries.

We prefer to view totally wild bears in their natural wilderness setting. We do not use viewing platforms but travel to where the bears live and eat. This makes viewing less uniform and predictable but, in our opinion, more real and more rewarding.

"A special place run by special people. Loved the place, the food and especially the bears. Thanks for making us welcome. We'll be back."  Allan Wheatley and Caroline Newman, Wetherby, West Yorks, UK.

A grizzly watches salmon near Grizzly Bear RanchMany of our guests have come away with excellent photographs, but we do not recommend our holidays to those for whom photography is their overriding priority. For us the experience of seeing the bears takes precedence.

Because our bears are totally wild there is always a chance you will come away empty-handed, although almost all our guests have seen at least one bear.

All the photos on this website have been taken at or around the ranch during the last three or four years.

"Everything perfect. Thank you so much for fulfilling my ambition - to see a bear - saw nine." - Cliff & Tina Reeder, Beverley, UK.

Safety around bears

A grizzly standing in the river near Grizzly Bear RanchBears are not usually dangerous if sensible precautions are taken. We have never had an attack or a close encounter. Like any wilderness activity, however, there are inherent risks.

Our philosophy is that the bears should not be disturbed and we keep a safe and respectful distance.

We follow a set of established bear-viewing protocols under the careful guidance of one of Canada's top bear biologists and bear-viewing experts.

Your guides carry bear-deterrent. You will be briefed in bear safety during your stay at the ranch.

Grizzly Bear Ranch is a member of the British Columbia Commercial Bear Viewing Association, an organisation which gives bear-viewing operators a voice in formulating provincial government policy and is responsible for promoting safe viewing and bear conservation.

"An incredible holiday! Thank you so much. We have thoroughly enjoyed our visit and will never forget those bears!" Ian Thompson & Joanne, Newcastle, UK.

Autumn itinerary

Mum and three cubs viewed from Grizzly Bear RanchYOUR day of bear-viewing at the ranch begins with a pre-dawn coffee before we head out.

Equipped with cameras and binoculars you will travel with a bear guide in one of our 4x4s.

We typically return to the ranch mid-morning for a hearty breakfast.

On some days we may also take you on middle-of-the-day tours to show you  tracks, bear paths, day beds and the salmon that are the bears' main autumn food source.

"This has been the best experience ever - what a special birthday present for me. Thank you so much for your wonderful hospitality. We hope to be back soon." Hazel Duale, Eastleigh, England.

We often take a wildlife-viewing trip by raft down our river - one of the most remote and beautiful waterways in BC.

As well as bears, the area around the ranch is home to dozens, sometimes hundreds, of bald eagles who also come to feed on the fish.

You may also see a beaver, moose, elk, white-tailed deer, mule deer. porcupine, coyote and even, very occasionally, a grey wolf, cougar or bobcat.
