Sunday Times Logo"If you are inclined towards experiencing pristine wilderness, you will be hard-pressed to beat a few days at the Grizzly Bear Ranch in British Columbia’s Selkirk Mountains. Or if, like me, you are an urban beast whose love affair with the wild is limited to watching David Attenborough, then you should try it, for it is quite an eye-opener."  To read the whole review click here +++

Our spring season  is the best time to see bears that have just emerged from denning. We concentrate on black bear-viewing but also sometimes see grizzlies.
We take our guests on trips in our 4x4s and on foot to places the animals favour.

"What can I say? Thank you all for the fantastic time and the hospitality. Bears, wolves, beaver and many more. Just wish we didn't have to leave quite so soon." John & Joy Osborne, Sale, Cheshire, UK.

Black bearWe also plan a few hours on one of our local lakes in our Zodiac boat.

This is a great time to enjoy the silent remoteness of the country where we live.

We like to combine boating with a walk through a remarkable old-growth cedar rainforest where some of the trees are more than 1,000 years old.

"Fantastic, awesome time, enjoyed meeting such interesting people! Lots of stories, laughs and bearspotting! Kristin - amazing food! Thank you for sharing your beautiful spot in the world with us for a few days." Barry & Sandie Dodds, Wanaka, New Zealand.

Bears, wolves, rare birds and wildflowers

A black bear near Grizzly Bear RanchApart from bears you may see moose, mule deer, white-tailed deer, bald eagles, coyotes, elk, porcupine, beaver, otter and, very occasionally, grey wolves.

Your experience will be totally natural and unique and with that comes an element of unpredictability.

Guests in the spring typically enjoy between four or five and about 20 bear sightings.

Hummingbirds at the ranchSpring is also the season that our wildflowers emerge. Indian paintbrush and wild lupins line the sides of the tracks that we take you on.

You will probably also see dozens of hummingbirds who return to our ranch after wintering in central America.

These tiny, remarkable birds make great viewing.

"The wonderful hospitality, a shared table, but our own space to retire to! We have loved the glimpses, some of them extended, of your amazing wildlife, your forests and snow-capped mountains. Thank you for sharing the charm of your wilderness lifestyle." D'Arcy & Jan Robinson, Inverell, Australia.

Wake up to the sounds of our beautiful river

View from the ranchA typical day would see you waking up in your own cabin by the river.

Kristin, who spent several years cooking on the diplomatic circuit, serves breakfast with hot tea and coffee.

Your guide will then take you out on the first of several bear-viewing tours in the surrounding forests and mountains.

A grey wolf near the ranchDepending on the day, we may take you up forgotten tracks to places where the bears like to feed after their long winter hibernation.

On other days we will take our Zodiac out onto one of our remote lakes.

Each day you will travel with one of our three trained, experienced and certified bear guides.

Watching a black bearLunch is a picnic of home-made sandwiches and fruit. Our tours typically end about 5.00pm.

We serve dinner, a sit-down affair with fine freshly-cooked local food and the best of British Columbia's beer and wine, at around 7.00pm in the main house.
